Campaign for new European anti-discrimination legislation
After years of calling for new EU law to expand legal protection against different forms of discrimination, the European Commission finally proposed a new anti-discrimination directive on 2 July 2008.
Freedom of assembly and expression
On 24 April 2007 ILGA-Europe launched a campaign on freedom of assembly for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Europe.
Project 'PRECIS – Prevention and empowerment in the CIS’
ILGA-Europe is a partner in the project “Prevention and Empowerment in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)” (PRECIS), implemented by COC Netherlands. The overall project goal is to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS and other STIs among LGBT communities via capacity building of LGBT organisations in the NIS.
Freedom of movement
After having campaigned for the adoption of a new EU Directive on Free Movement that would recognise an inclusive definition of the family, ILGA-Europe is monitoring implementation of the Directive at the national level, together with members of the EU Network, with a view of ensuring that same-sex families enjoy the fullest protection in accordance with the Directive.
Social exclusion
The EU has been working on the eradication of poverty and social exclusion since 2000. Through the so-called open method of co-ordination, common objectives are defined, that in turn are translated into national action plans. Although there is a clear link between the discrimination experienced by gay, lesbian, and bisexual people and levels of poverty and social exclusion, little attention has been paid to this issue at EU level.
